Outdoor Explorers

What is ‘Outdoor Explorers’?

Our ‘Outdoor Explorers’ is based on the idea of woodland learning.  Woodland learning provides ways of meeting Foundation Stage learning aims while developing practical and creative skills.  Children benefit from a practical element to their learning and often achieve greater levels of success in this exciting context.  Children may become more confident in a natural environment and acquire a deeper understanding about the world around them.  They have a chance to explore the outside world in a safe and secure environment alongside familiar staff.

Typical Day

Meet in the Key Stage 2 hall from 8:45am with the register taken at 9am.  Lunch will also be ordered on the day.  Children will participate in explorer activities in the morning, having an opportunity to play with KS2 children at break time.  We will walk back to the KS1 site at 11.30am to be ready for lunch.

Activities

Examples of activities and games for children in the forest school environment:

  • Leaf crowns
  • Ephemeral art
  • Scavenger hun
  • Building dens
  • Using small world equipment
  • Clay models
  • Bark rubbings
  • Outdoor painting

Clothing

  • Wellington boots/old trainers/suitable shoes
  • Warm socks
  • Trousers
  • T-shirt
  • Fleece/sweatshirt/jumper
  • Jacket/waterproof coat
  • Gloves, Scarf and hat
  • A change of shoes for the afternoon

It is advisable to put the children in old clothes as they may get a little muddy

After our visits we would love to have feedback from families to find out what your children enjoyed and what else we might be able to provide in the ‘Outdoor Explorer’ area.

Health and safety

A risk assessment has been carried out in line with routines for checking our own outdoor areas. The site will be checked on the  day before and in the morning when setting up our visit.    Before our visit we will talk with children about safe ways to explore the area, preparing them for the day.  Staffing ratios will be high while we are in the area and additional members of staff will help us walk back to school.  Children’s safety will be our priority at all times.

We would love to receive feedback from families to find out what your children enjoyed and what else we might be able to provide in the ‘Outdoor Explorer’ area.
Please email any feedback/ideas to brampton-ellis-cofe.primary@rotherham.gov.uk
